Nikolay Gres “The Song About the Headman”

Nikolay Gres (tenor) & The Alexandrov Red Army Choir perform “The Cossack Levko’s Song About the Headman” from the opera “The Night in May” by Rimsky-Korsakov, Story by Nikolay Gogol.
Conductor – Boris Alexandrov
Early 60-s.

“…This song actually is a cossack Christmas carol. The young lad (main hero) and his friends decided to sing about a head but in a specific funny way… To be more precise, thus they tried to make fun of the local Headman whom they didn’t like because he didn’t want the young lad to marry the Headman’s daughter… They also sing – “Cossacks, enjoy yourselves (make merry)! (Oy, gulyai, gulyai, Kozak!).”
