Does anybody know if Nikolai Gres is still alive?

    Kind regards,

      Hi Anne.

Thanks for your question! According to the English Wikipedia Alexandrov Ensemble Soloists article, Gres passed away in 2003 or 2004.

You can visit this link for more info about him.

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

When I was a child, I listened a lot to the Red Army Choir songs on two LP albums my father owned. ” The birch tree” was one of the songs that stole my heart, because of this unusual, wonderful and powerful voice and the rythm of the song.

It may sound strange, but these songs stayed with me all those years (I’m 46 now).
I never knew what the song was about, the name of the song, who the singer was and what he looked like, but I recently found out, thanks to the internet and thanks to your blog and photo.

The song and Gres’ voice still moves me deeply. Even though he passed away, I want to thank him anyway. 🙂

    Am Anne:

I have a similar experience! When I was younger, I listened to a Red Army Choir CD that featured Gres singing “I Wandered Through the World.” I had no idea who the singer was, but I fell in love with his powerful voice. I would listen to that song over and over again, imagining that the singer was some handsome, soldierly man. I was right! 😉

I have a question for anyone: I read somewhere that Gres has a biography. What is it called? Is there an English translation of it?
